2 The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region
The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region is located in northwestern New Jersey. It is a region of great natural beauty. The Appalachian Mountains run from Alabama to Canada.

3 The Kittatinny Mountains
The Kittatinny Mountains run parallel to New Jersey’s border with Pennsylvania in the Northwest. The word “Kittatinny” comes from a Lenape word that means “big mountains”.

4 Some places you can visit in the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region are:
The Delaware Water Gap, The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and High Point State Park.

5 Another special sight is Sunfish Pond, a glacial lake in northwestern NJ.

6 The Highlands Region The Highlands Region has been home to many important industries. It is an area that is rich in minerals.

7 The city of Dover in Morris County was a center for the mining and shipping of iron.

8 Other sights to see in the Highlands Region:
Lake Hopatcong Vernon ski resorts

9 Weathering is the wearing away of rock by wind and rain.
In the Highlands Region, weathering has caused rocks to wear away.

10 The Central Corridor/ Piedmont
The word piedmont means “foot of the mountain”. A region gets this name because it lies at the foot or base of mountains.

11 Some places to see in the Central Corridor/Piedmont Region are:

12 Many large rivers flow across the Central Corridor/ Piedmont Region

13 The longest river within New Jersey’s borders is the Raritan River.

14 Urban areas have the characteristics of a city.
Newark is the largest city in New Jersey.

15 Paterson is the first planned industrial city in the United States.

16 Elizabeth Since its founding in 1664, Elizabeth has become an industrial city.

17 A suburb is a community at the edge of or near a city.
Princeton is a suburb or Trenton and the sight of Princeton University.

18 More people live in the Central Corridor/Piedmont Region of New Jersey than in any other region of New Jersey.

19 The Atlantic Coastal Plain Region
The Atlantic Coastal plain Region of New Jersey covers the largest portion of the state.

20 The Atlantic Coastal plain is made up of the Inner Coastal Plain and the Outer Coastal Plain.

21 In parts of the Inner Coastal Plain, the soil is very fertile
In parts of the Inner Coastal Plain, the soil is very fertile. As a result, farms produce many kinds of fruits and vegetables.

22 The Outer Coastal Plain
If you travel to the Outer Coastal Plain, you will see salt marshes and pine forests. The Pinelands and the Jersey Shore are both included in the Outer Coastal Plain.

23 At the Jersey Shore you might see barrier islands, boardwalks, and resorts.

24 A barrier island is formed when waves deposit ridges of sand.

25 New Jersey Pinelands The New Jersey Pinelands, sometimes called the Pine Barrens, is a very special and highly protected are of the Atlantic Coastal Plain Region. More than 7 trillion gallons of fresh water lies below the Pinelands. Congress created the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve to protect this resource.

27 A rural area is an area with low population density.
Some rural areas in the Pinelands have fewer then 10 people per square mile. A rural area is an area with low population density.
