1
IMMUNE SYSTEM What does it do? – Fights disease
2
NONSPECIFIC RESPONSE Nonspecific Defense– attempts to get rid of all infections Physical barriers – A. skin B. mucous C. sweat, saliva, tears
3
NONSPECIFIC RESPONSE Cells – Macrophages (WBC’s) eat viruses and bacteria; phagocytosis Inflammatory Response – body temperature rises
4
SPECIFIC RESPONSE Specific Defense – Attempts to get rid of individual types of infections
5
SPECIFIC RESPONSE VIDEO SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC RESPONSE
use “Interaction of Antigen Presenting Cells and T-helper Cells” then “Cytotoxic T-cell Activity Against Target Cells (441.0K)” VIDEO SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC RESPONSE use “Interaction of Antigen Presenting Cells and T-helper Cells” then “Cytotoxic T-cell Activity Against Target Cells (441.0K)”
6
SPECIFIC RESPONSE Step one – Dendritic cells display virus parts to immunity cells; looking for a correct match Step two – Correct T-cell is found Step three – T-cells reproduce and kill infected cells
7
SPECIFIC RESPONSE Step four – B-cells reproduce and make antibodies
Step five – Antibodies coat virus (cannot infect) Step six – Some B-cells become memory cells
8
Memory Cells
9
VACCINES When you get a shot, you are getting: Antibodies?
B. Full strength virus? C. “Weakened” virus?
10
VACCINES How do vaccines work? Body is given a small amount of “weakened” virus/bacteria and memory cells are produced. Edward Jenner; Coxpox; “vaca”
11
IMMUNE SYSTEM DISORDERS
Autoimmune diseases – Immune system is attacking you! Arthritis – attacks tendons in joints Juvenile Diabetes – attacks pancreas
12
IMMUNE SYSTEM DISORDERS
AIDS – HIV infects and destroys T-cells; immune system does not work Usually die from “simple” diseases like pneumonia
13
Immune System Summary and how Influenza Vaccine is produced
video
16
IMMUNE SYSTEM DISORDERS
Allergies – Immune system is proteins from environment (bee venom, dust, pollen) Blood pressure drops very quickly Injection of epinephrine
