MACEDONIAN PROJECT JOURNEY
What is the name of your lab, team, entity or organisation? December 2016 – January 2017 Understanding heating practices in Skopje Valley Mapped heating practices of 5044 households (3% of total number) in Skopje Valley. Used ‘facilitated’ - as we call it- crowdsourcing method to collect geo-tagged data w/mobile app Placeformer Findings #SkopjeSeZagreva Skopje Lab – City of Skopje Innovation Center December 2016 Changed challenge question and data source What are people’s patterns and behaviors related to heating, that contribute to air pollution most? Data source: facilitated crowdsourcing August 2016 CHALLENGE How to measure/determine the pollution at micro level as a prerequisite for designing proper local actions? Data source explored: big-data and bus sensors What is the name of your project? Reducing air pollution in Skopje What is your project about? Understanding people’s patterns and behaviors related to household heating practices as a source of pollution and designing (and in future) implementing local actions to reduce the air pollution in Skopje March 2017 Stakeholders Workshop for validation of the results Quality of data validated. Based on the data, action oriented challenges defined focusing on household heating. Action on public transport also defined. June-July/ 2017 Data modeling and scenarios development Expert drafting and mapping actions that will help reduce the air pollution. Developed #Roadmap for success June 2017 New challenges defined How might we change the heating practices of the households (particularly low income ones) to reduce air pollution in Skopje? How might we increase the use of public bus transport in Skopje? July 2017 PM10 PM2,5 NOx CO SOx Broad stakeholders engagement Presenting the findings and proposed actions for #SkopjeSeZagreva and the Roadmap to the public administration and the all relevant stakeholders. This helped us demystify the sources and changed the way they look into the problem October/November 2017 August-September/ 2017 OUTCOME The roadmap finalized and adopted by the Government as national plan for addressing air pollution in Skopje Pilot actions being developed and tested. Action Description: Target by 2020 Target by 2025 Urban Rural Number of households to covered by one of the measures 55.8% 22.2% 81.3% 42% will meet the most stringent criteria for an energy efficient facility 8960 2660 15600 4290 will use more efficient firewood stoves 9000 3100 20400 6770 will use pellet stoves 6630 790 7280 1460 will use heat pumps 8140 2770 16280 5390 will use natural gas stoves 930 280 2700 450 Increased share of central heating system users 3000 / 10000 2025 Roadmap designed Local very targeted actions designed to reduce the emissions from heating for 62%, including non-traditional educational approaches, partnerships with private sector and alternative financing models. Innovative products such is air-purifying billboard also included and being prototyped.
