We’re in a republic.”
9
Proposed Mission Comments
Proposed Mission Comments Top Concerns: Shorten statement (“so all stakeholders can remember it”) Drop the word “Believing” (“grammatically awkward”) Remove core values (“mission and values are two separate ideas”) Confusion about “California students” (“international students may view that statement as excluding them”)
10
Proposed Mission Comments
Proposed Mission Comments Several comments discussed conciseness of current compared to proposed statement. Confusion remains about changes related to repeatability. Some discussed inspirational approach of proposed statement.
11
EMP Goals Feedback Goal 1: Create a culture of equity that promotes student success, particularly for underserved students. Should a focus on “equity” be a college goal? Yes: 68% N=273
12
EMP Goals Feedback Goal 2: Strengthen a sense of community and commitment to the College’s mission; expand participation from all constituencies in shared governance. Should a focus on “community” be a college goal? Yes: 78% N=273
13
EMP Goals Feedback Goal 3: Recognize and support a campus culture that values ongoing improvement and stewardship of resources. Should a focus on “improvement” and “stewardship of resources” be a college goal? Yes: 76% N=271
14
EMP Goals Comments “Equity” as concept is vague
EMP Goals Comments “Equity” as concept is vague “Equity” conflated with other concepts (equality, opportunity, etc.), including a preference for certain student groups over others. Comment regarding other goals focus on lack of clarity Does “community” include local community? “Stewardship of Resources” should focus on environment, not budget Not explicit enough for specific metrics to be instituted Confusion reflected as several comments discussed goals as part of mission statement.
15
Summary General support for the proposed college mission statement among employees Additional communication needed as one-third of respondents are unsure All three goals received a majority of support (more than two-thirds in agreement) Consider information dissemination process to increase support from all constituents
