2 FDR Takes Charge Gov of NY, Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected Prez in 1932 He grew up in a wealthy family, married a distant 5th cousin named Eleanor who was TR’s neice FDR contracted polio in the early 1920’s and was paralyzed from waste down FDR promised a “New Deal” for Americans and was forced to act quickly after he took office

3 FDR’s 1st 100 Days FDR moved swiftly to restore the nations confidence
He passed the Emergency Banking Bill, closing all banks until they were deemed strong enough to reopen He also used the radio to deliver “Fireside Chats” to the American people, radio addresses used to reassure the American people To give Americans confidence in banks FDR created the FDIC to insure bank deposits up to $2,500

4 FDR’s New Deal Relief FERA CCC CWA Recovery PWA NRA AAA

5 New Deal FERA: Gives $500 million to states for direct relief, unemployed workers could go to unemployment offices for money CCC: Employs young men in conservation projects, planting trees, building trails, digging ditches CWA: Provides temporary employment for men and women, short lived program

6 New Deal PWA: creates jobs for projects such as building roads, buildings, and other public works projects (PWA creates 34,000 public works projects) NRA: encouraged business to create fair codes for competition by setting hours, prices and production levels (Blue Eagle) AAA: The government gives money back to farmers in exchange for them slowing production (this is designed to increase prices of crops)

7 Tennessee Valley Authority
Tennessee Valley region is suffering from floods, deforestation, disease, illiteracy and malnutrition TVA is designed to build dams, power plants, and control diseases Local utility companies are not happy because this directly took business from them (Supreme Court refused to step in)

8 New Deal Opposition Republicans claimed the New Deal made the government too powerful President Hoover and Congressman Taft(son of President Taft) were very outspoken critics Some Democrats, like Alfred Smith, the 1924 Democratic nominee agreed and rebelled against the Democratic party

9 New Deal Opposition Some felt the New Deal did not do enough
Francis Townsend called on FDR to give all Americans over 60, $200 a month Charles Coughlin, a Roman Catholic priest, broke with FDR claiming the New Deal was actually a “Raw Deal” FDR’s most extreme critic was Huey Long, Gov of LA who called for Americans to “Share our Wealth”

13 Huey Long He wanted wealthier Americans to “Share the Wealth” proposing high taxes and redistribution of wealth to poor Americans This would have taxed the rich large amounts in order to give money to the poor
