Sec. 1-5: Subtracting Real Numbers

Again, try to avoid having “double” signs when adding or subtracting…make things easier for yourself. Remember SAME signs you ADD and DIFFERENT SIGNS you SUBTRACT. This same rule can be applied to the “double” signs. i.e (-4) 13 – 4 The 13 is positive and the 4 is negative DIFFERENT so SUBTRACT 9

i.e. -14 – (-8) Rewrite the “- (-8) part Notice that the 14 is NEGATIVE & the 8 is POSITIVE…DIFFERENT signs so SUBTRACT. -6

Adding & Subtracting Decimal Numbers: Remember to LINE UP the decimal points when you ADD or SUBTRACT decimal values. i.e – 4.56 Rewrite VERTICALLY if you need to! *** Notice I placed the larger absolute value on top to make my subtraction easier.

Change the fractions to have COMMON DENOMINATORS….(15) - 15 ( 15)
Adding & Subtracting Fractions: Remember to find a COMMON DENOMINATOR when adding or subtracting fractions. i.e (+4) ( 5) ( 4) Change the fractions to have COMMON DENOMINATORS….(15) - ( 15)
