1 Vocabulary Week 9

2 Word 1: Crevice Def: A narrow crack in the side of a cliff Sent: Amy dreamed she fell into a crevice in the side of a mountain.

3 Word 2: Glimmer / Glimmering Def: A weak and unsteady light shining off a surface Sent: In the mountain was a pool of water that glimmered brightly from an unknown light.

4 Word 3: Dramatic Def: Striking, intense in appearance or action Sent: The dream was quite dramatic and quite strange for Amy.

5 Word 4: Plunge Def: To take a fall or dive into or suddenly start something without thinking about it first Sent: Amy decided to plunge into the mysterious water.

6 Word 5: Hesitate Def: To pause or stop before saying or doing something Sent: Amy did not hesitate but jumped right in.

7 Word 6: Penetrate Def: To go inside or break through Sent: Amy could not penetrate the water, but simply bounced off.

8 Word 7: Desperate / Desperately Def: To be in a state of worry or panic because you need something Sent: Amy desperately wanted to wake up from this strange dream.

9 Word 8: Bizarre Def: Very unusual or strange Sent: Suddenly a bizarre creature came out of the water.

10 Word 9: Provoke Def: To make someone angry by annoying or bothering Sent: Amy had provoked the creature and it was now hissing loudly.

11 Word 10: Tedious Def: Something that is long and boring to do Sent: Amy awoke to the boring, tedious life she lived as a librarian helper.

12 Word 11: Concise Def: Expressed clearly in very few words Sent: Amy quickly wrote the concise story of her dream in her diary.

13 Word 12: Predicament Def: To be in a difficult, hard situation Sent: Amy was in a predicament. Should she tell her friend who might laugh?

14 Word 13: Ferocious Def: Savagely fierce or aggressive Sent: The creature of her dream was ferocious yet quite mystical.

15 Word 14: Anguish Def: Extreme emotional pain Sent: Did the dream have anything to do with the anguish Amy had over her mother dying?

16 Word 15: Vigorous / Vigorously Def: Activity that requires a lot of energy Sent: Amy got dressed and started to vigorously walk two miles to school.

17 Word 16: Sneer Def: A hateful look that shows disrespect Sent: Along the way she met her old boyfriend John who sneered at her for leaving him.

18 Word 17: Glum Def: Looking and feeling sad and dejected Sent: Amy felt glum because she did not understand her dream and what it meant.

19 Word 18: Unfathomable Def: Impossible to understand Sent: The death of her mom, the dream, the meaning of life were all unfathomable to her.

20 Word 19: Gloomy Def: Sad and dejected Sent: Life had no answers for Amy as she walked along in the gray, gloomy winter morning.

21 Word 20: Wail Def: A high pitched cry Sent: Suddenly she stopped and wailed loudly, “Why me? Why me?” She felt better.
