1 Lecture 02

2 Recap Data Visualization Data Related Terms

3 Outline Need of data visualization Importance of data visualization
Limitations of Spreadsheet Interpretation through data visualization Interactive Visualization

4 Need for data visualization
Big data Broad term for data Powerful tool for seeking insights large and complex 90% data has been generated in last two years 2.5 billion GB is generating everyday Data generated in 2015 by 1 trillion connected devices and objects

5 How are you going to make sense of all that information efficiently so you can make a good decision?

6 Data Visualization

7 Importance of Data Visualization
well designed data graphics method of consolidating data into one collective, illustrative graphic patterns can be spotted very easily when data volumes are very large expose something new about the underlying patterns and relationships contained within the data key to good decision

8 Limitations of Spreadsheet
electronic spreadsheet cannot visually represent the information due to data presentation limitations spreadsheets would be a humongous pile of paper if printed out would spend hours searching among thousands of rows and columns of data

9 Interpretation through Data Visualization
Present the data in a way that saves time and energy Interactive charts and graphs makes easier to identify areas that need attention or improvement understand what factors influence design system predict how to change system design accordingly predict the efficiency of system

10 Interactive Visualization
A step further to data visualization humans interact with computers to create graphic illustrations of information how this process can be made more efficient Two criteria Human input control of some aspect of the visual representation of information, or of the information being represented, must be available to a human Response time changes made by the human must be incorporated into the visualization in a timely manner
