1 Identify 5 traits about each animal below:
Date: 10/31/16 Topic: Classification Page # ___ Must wear uniforms/IDs! 10/31/16 EBHS Admit Slip Identify 5 traits about each animal below: Lion Chinchilla Ant

2 Traits:

3 How do we know they are different species?
Bunny Pug “Punny”???

4 Definition of a Species
Two animals are the same species if they can mate and produce fertile offspring* This means their BABIES must be have to HAVE BABIES* What’s it called when two different species mate and produce an offspring?

5 Female lion + male tiger
Hybrid klkk When two different species produce an offspring. The offspring is sterile (cannot have children).* Female lion + male tiger Liger

6 So how do we organize species?
Based on shared traits! *Classification = The scientific process of organizing organisms

7 Taxonomy* *Branch of science that deals with classification
*Grouping organisms based on shared traits (characteristics) There are two methods for doing this…

8 *Write down these words, in this order! 
#1) Taxonomic Rank* Starts with the broadest category (Kingdom) and narrows down to the most specific (Species) Anyone remember them? Think: Animal Kingdom, Plant Kingdom, etc.  Dog, Tulip, etc.

10 Invented by Carl Linneaus*

11 With your table partner, make up a pneumonic device!
Kingdom (K) Phylum (P) Class (C) Order (O) Family (F) Genus (G) Species (S) K P C O F G S With your table partner, make up a pneumonic device!

12 Are two species that share the same family more related, or share the same class more related?

13 Taxonomic Rank: Practice
Organize the ranks from most broad to most specific Match with their associated rank

14 Binomial Nomenclature*
Formal method of naming species Contains genus and species name* The genus is always capitalized and the species is in lowercase Ex. Homo sapien, Homo habilis, Austrolopithicus afarensis Question: Which of the 3 organism above are more related? Why?

15 Relatedness The more categories two organisms share with each other, the more related they are!

16 Animal Diversity Index
ts/classification/Animalia.html What is related to your favorite animal?

17 #2) Cladograms* Diagram that shows relationships between organisms based on shared traits* See handout: Cut out each organism Group based on traits listed

18 Cladogram: Shared Traits
So which two organisms are the most related? Which two organisms share the most traits in common? Cladogram: Shared Traits

19 Cladogram Practice Pass out worksheet
