RAIRS of Methanol on Cu(110)-(2×1)O striped phase Summary
3
Motivation Methanol is the smallest alcohol molecule and a technologically important molecule whose synthesis and oxidation is catalysed by ,e.g.,copper. Though methanol is simple ,its oxidation process on catalytic surfaces exhibits a surprisingly large complexity with several different possible reaction routes.

SUMMARY During 50L exposure on clean Cu (110), along with other reaction products, a vibrational feature around wavenumber 980 cm-1 is found which could be formaldehyde. This feature was absent on the striped phase. Desorption experiment on clean surface shows a vibrational feature at around 1090 cm-1 which could be formate. Desorption from striped phase has same features as after 50 L methanol on clean surface.
