1 Welcome to Human Geography
Fast Facts This is a college level class. It is hard. It is challenging. This class is about real places, things, people, and cultures. Some of these things, people, and cultures are not pretty, nice, or laudable. This class gives students the skills, tools, and knowledge to empower themselves and change the world.

2 Here is what the textbook looks like:
Parents, if you aren’t seeing it, that may explain a low grade.

3 Website Information Click here, then here, or go to From EHS Website

4 What is on the website Types of assessments and expectations
Forms, assignments (so if they forgot it at school...), general information Other resources (many are used in class) Help for understanding chapters and information from class What is going on, day by day, (usually updated every week)

5 Take a picture with your cell phone.
Supplies for Geography classes: Notebook options Best: 3-ring binder with dividers/paper (easy to keep organized) Works pretty good: Paper with clips and pockets (harder to put stuff in) Worst option: spiral notebook with tape/glue/staples (to keep handouts, etc.)  (NOTE: IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO HAS A HARD TIME KEEPING TRACK OF THINGS (LIKE NOTES) USE A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK, at least you’ll find it most of the time) Writing utensils (pen for AP essays) Colored pencils (for maps) Highlighter (for critical reading) Sticky notes (in place of highlighting in book for critical reading) Not required (but is an investment in your academic future) Flash drive Take a picture with your cell phone. Students will be doing this a lot during the (school year)

6 For some the picture taking
I hate to beg, but because these things are sometimes not provided due to funding: Tissue paper (Kleenex) Number 2 pencils Colored pencils Computer paper Sticky notes Of course you would find the supply list on the website: Click here Then here For some the picture taking was just practice.

7 What parents can do to help your student:
Ask them what they covered in class on a daily basis and discuss the issues that were brought up in class. Make sure you see them reading the book, and using the website. Watch/listen to the news (especially ones that cover topics in depth. There are suggested sites on the website.) Discuss what is happening in the world. Play: Wait,Wait, Don’t Tell Me. (11:00 Sat. mornings on FM 90.7)

8 When you have concerns:
Ask your student what is going on. Is it the material? Is it the difficulty? Is it a time management issue? Help your student determine their strengths and weaknesses and develop strategies. a. Some are on the website and older brothers/sisters may be able to help. 3. Get your student into a study group. They are probably going to do this in college anyway. 4. Contact me!!! You can do this first but one of the reasons for this class is to develop the skills needed for college level work.

9 Contact Information Preferable and your best chance for a quick reply Curtright phone: Especially if you want a parent conference I can only give grades by phone, I can not them! Send a request via with phone number for quickest reply.
