Wave Behaviors pg. 58 EQ: How are the behavior of waves affected as they interact or pass through different mediums? LO: We will read an article and deduce which wave behavior is taking place CT: I will differentiate between the different wave behaviors in my own words in my ISN

Reflection- the wave will always reflect in such a way that the angle at which they approach the barrier will equal the angle at which they reflect off the barrier. (Angle of Incidence = Angle of Reflection)

Refraction- Bending the paths of waves as they enter new mediums
Refraction- Bending the paths of waves as they enter new mediums. This is accompanied by change in speed, wavelength, and direction.

Diffraction- waves bend around obstacles, either through openings or around corners. The amount of diffraction increase with increasing wavelength.

Interference When two waves meet while traveling along the same medium
Constructive Interference – waves get bigger because crests overlap crests and troughs overlap troughs Destructive Interference – waves get smaller because crests overlap troughs

Doppler Effect The effect produced by a moving source of waves in which there is an apparent upward shift in frequency for observers towards whom the source is approaching and an apparent downward shift in frequency for observers from whom the source is receding. It is important to note that the effect does not result because of an actual change in the frequency of the source.

Polarization – the process of transforming unpolarized light to polarized light through use of barriers to block certain waves (Filtering) Light waves travel in all directions with both vertical and horizontal components. If you block the horizontal component, only the vertical component will continue.

Pitch The sensation of frequency Higher note / Higher frequency
Lower note / Lower frequency

Resonance -When one object vibrating at the same natural frequency of a second object forces that second object into vibrational motion.
