2 1. Human Rights Statement on Human Rights
Universal Declaration of Human Rights: States that all people deserve basic rights. Countries that signed the Helsinki Accords agreed to respect human rights.

3 b. Human Rights Abuses Types of human rights abuses are torture, slavery, killing and other human rights abuses Human rights violations are most common in countries that are not democracies. Women and children have an increased risk for violence and abuse.

4 c. Working for Rights NGO’s (Non-governmental organizations)
The purpose of a NGO is to provide services or promote certain public policies. Example: The Red Cross Human rights are better protected in democratic countries.

5 2. Global Challenges Poverty
More than 20 percent of the world’s people live on less than $1 per day and do not have access to basic services such as health care and education. Poverty has many causes such as: lack of natural resources, wars, poor government planning and rapid population growth. One result of poverty can be famine: an extreme shortage of food.

6 b. Disease The greatest impact that disease has is on local and regional levels. Travel and globalization has made controlling diseases a challenge for the entire world. Disease can also lead to epidemics: Outbreak of contagious disease that spreads quickly and affects many people.

7 c. Natural Disasters Include hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods
Affect many areas of the world and often cause death and destroys homes an businesses.

8 3. Population Movements a. Population movements have increased dramatically. Many choose to move but others are refugees: people who flee violence in their home country to seek safety in another nation.

9 b. Migration Push/ Pull factors
Push factors “push” people to leave their homeland. Examples War Persecution poverty Pull factors “pull” people to a new place. Opportunities in a particular country for jobs and a better life. Explain how globalization has changed migration *Use the section on page 998 to answer this question.

10 c. Urbanization Happens within a country
The move to urban areas from rural areas. Why do people move from rural areas to the cities? In search of jobs and better opportunities. Where is the type of migration occurring more often? It is occurring in the worlds developing countries, like Brazil and India.
