Rocky soil, not good for farming. Positioned on the North Atlantic Coast Many forests and rivers

4 New England Colonies Economy (how they made their money)
Used the ocean as a source of food and commerce (trade, economics) Fishing, Whaling, Timber, Shipping, and Trade. French Settled to Trade Furs Subsistence farming: small farms where people grew just enough to feed themselves and their families… they did not sell their goods.

Pilgrims Mayflower-1620 Plymouth Puritans Emigrated to escape religious persecution Established the Massachusetts Bay Colony for a settlement involved in a more “purified” church. Also founded New Hampshire and Connecticut

First real democrat-believed people had the right to create the government they wanted Separation of church and state Anne Hutchison Believed that God spoke directly to her and not through the bible as everyone else believed She and her followers were banished from Massachusetts in 1638. Crime was holding meeting to discuss sermons and criticized ministers and their teaching. Both were trying to find a more accepting place to live The government was separate from church leadership

Fundamental Orders of Connecticut The first written constitution on North American soil. (Not all countries have a written constitution…England doesn’t.) Expanded the idea of representative government Extended voting rights to non-church members Established term limits

Had a major fishing port
