Assessment objectives – AS (A specs)
F211 / F321 / G491 47% ‘demonstrate’ 47% ‘apply, analyse & evaluate’ 7% HSW F212 / F322 / G492 42% ‘demonstrate’ 48% ‘apply, analyse & evaluate’ 10% HSW Old Paper 1 44–48% ‘demonstrate’ 38–42% ‘apply’ 12–18% ‘analyse, interpret & evaluate’ Paper 2 26–32% ‘demonstrate’ 42–48% ‘apply’ 28–30% ‘analyse, interpret & evaluate’ New
4
AO changes – what does that mean?
Less recall More new information contexts in which to apply knowledge / understanding data / information to evaluate / interpret
5
What’s new? MCQs – in certain papers (Paper 1 at AS)
LoR – Paper 2 at AS, all papers at A Level Banded mark scheme Credit for line of reasoning / structure Maths skills – weighting & skills subject-dependent Practical skills – Section 1.1 of the spec, assessed in relevant contexts New topics
6
Mocks and exams Mocks based on SAMs/Practice papers (linear exam) will be harder to interpret compared to e.g. F321 (modular exam) Mark schemes are finalised at standardisation using candidates responses – SAMs and Practice papers haven’t been through this process. Grade boundaries are set at awarding taking into account how papers worked, how candidates performed, statistical data (comparable outcomes etc) Ultimate the aims of the exams is to differentiate between candidates across the national cohort.
7
Specification and textbooks
AS modules of specification + Maths Skills (5f) Practical Skills (1.1) can be assessed (HSW helps give ideas of contexts) Bold statements are in A Level only for Maths Depth of knowledge – refer to Maths Skills hand Books / Practical Skills Handbooks / Endorsed text books
8
PAGs These are suggested practicals – there is no requirement to use them. We would always want to produce error free resources - reviewing and responding to feedback. If you have queries/comment, please let us know :
9
Level of Response Extended response question (6 marks)
The science determines the level (1, 2, 3) The quality of the communication determines the mark within the level (communication statement)
10
MCQs Students may need help developing skills in answering these.
Questions will be ramped in demand in the live papers. Answer the question first before looking at answers. Answer will include distractors – correct answers shouldn’t be easily guessable. RTQ carefully – sometimes not all calculations need to be completed If candidates get stuck, highlight the Q, move on and come back later – don’t sacrifice Section B for MCQs. No negative marking – put something in.

What’s available to help?
MCQs – quizzes on OCR website (6 ChA / 10ChB) LoR – Sample student response & Chief Examiner commentary Maths skills – Maths Skills Handbook including exemplifications Practical skills – Practical skills handbooks / SAMS & practice papers New topics – today’s handout
