1 Timelines TIMELINES are an interesting way to organize information.
Most information on timelines are arranged in chronological order, which mean from earliest in time to most recent in time.

2 Timelines Timelines can organize events over just one year or over thousands of years.

3 Timelines We are going to look through and organize some examples of timelines and then you will have to create a UTAH’S EARLY PEOPLE timeline.

4 Timelines Look at the following list and arrange the events in chronological order. Write them down only in order (DON’T write them down as you see them on the screen).

5 Timelines OH…and don’t forget, every good graph, chart and map has a title so after you have arranged the information, give the information a good title describing what kind of information the timeline is about.

6 Timelines Arrange the following days in chronological order:
October January 1 July March 17 February July 24 May April 1 November May 12 September December 25

7 Timelines Put dates here
Even though these are easy, it is best to write all the dates down first. That way, if you miss one, you don’t have to re-copy the whole thing!! Put dates here January 1 March 17

8 Timelines PUT EVENTS HERE!!! Put dates here
When you have finished arranging all of the dates in chronological order then go back and write the events next to the correct date!!! Put dates here PUT EVENTS HERE!!! January 1 New Years Day March 17 St Patrick’s Day

9 Timelines PUT EVENTS HERE!!! Put dates here
After all of the events were arranged in chronological order, make a number line using all of the dates in order. Put dates here PUT EVENTS HERE!!! January 1 New Years Day March 17 St Patrick’s Day March17 January1

10 Timelines It seems easy but there are a few points of confusion. If we are dealing with years before 0 (called BC) it complicates things a bit.

11 If I have a timeline below, I would put the year 0 in the middle.
Timelines If I have a timeline below, I would put the year 0 in the middle. Think about a number line in math…Which numbers on a number line are on the left side of zero? Which are on the right?

12 On a timeline, BC years are on the left and AD years are on the right.
Timelines On a timeline, BC years are on the left and AD years are on the right. NEGATIVE numbers are on the left… POSITIVE numbers are on the right. The bigger the number is the farther from zero it is…

13 Timelines If I have 10 and -10 they are both 10 units away from zero. If I have 1 and -1, they are both 1 unit away from zero. -10 +10 -1 +1

14 Timelines -1 +1 -10 +10 If I were to arrange these #’s in chronological order, I would arrange them like this: -10, -1, 1, 10 NOTICE: BIGGEST NEGATIVE TO SMALLEST NEGATIVE AND SMALLEST POSITIVE TO BIGGEST POSITIVE.

15 Timelines The same thing happens with timelines and chronological order: Biggest BC to Smallest BC, Smallest AD to Largest AD.

16 Timelines You are going to arrange the following items about Early people into chronological order. Then, you will create a timeline, using only the dates of the events.

17 Timelines AFTER Put the dates in order on a #line.
THESE EVENTS ARE NOT IN ORDER!!!! WRITE THEM IN ORDER ON YOUR PAPER. BEGIN BY ARRANGING THE YEARS FIRST AND THEN WRITE THE EVENTS NEXT TO THE CORRECT DATE AFTER YOU ARE POSITIVE YOU HAVE THE DATES IN THE CORRECT ORDER. AFTER Put the dates in order on a #line.

18 Timeline 1100AD- Five Historic Tribes move into Utah
400AD-Fremont culture develops in Utah 6500BC- Archaic people live in the Great Basin 300BC- The Anasazi culture spreads along the San Juan River 11,000BC- Paleo Indians live all over North and South America 1765AD- Spanish explorers enter Utah 1300AD-Fremont and Anasazi disappear from Utah 1620AD- Navajo’s move into the San Juan River area
