What are they? In your groups, use the pictures on the following slides to create a definition for each of the five themes of geography.

Location: Where is it? Location determines where a place is located.
This can be done using RELATIVE location or ABSOLUTE location. THINK ABOUT IT…. Which kind of location do you think gives more information?

place: What is it like? Place describes features that give a location character. This could be human or physical characteristics. THINK ABOUT IT…. Which kind of questions could you ask to find out more about a place?

region: What does it have in common with other places?
Regions are groups of places that share similar physical or human characteristics. This could be defined by peoples perceptions (“I live in the south.”) or formally (states, countries, cities) THINK ABOUT IT…. How would you describe the region you live in?

movement: How do people, goods, and ideas get from place to place?
Movement describes how things get around. Examples: car, truck, plane, boat, etc. THINK ABOUT IT…. What are some ways ideas get around?

Human/environment interaction: How do humans and the environment affect each other?
Human/Environment Interaction describes how people depend on, modify, and adapt to their surroundings. THINK ABOUT IT…. What is one positive and one negative way you have affected your environment?
