2 REVIEW What was Hoover’s opinion on direct relief? What about the economy? Who did Hoover believe was best suited for providing relief to the people? What was Hoover “urging” at the White House Conference? What was the largest project constructed by the Public Works Program? What did the Federal Farm Board do? Hoover’s policies failed, but what did the government realize during his presidency?

3 Radical Tactics Communists and Socialists see opportunity to gain members Radicals blamed capitalism for the depression - encouraged involvement in labor unions - organized hunger marches and protests

4 The Bonus Army WWI veterans want early pension payments from bonuses owed to them - many unemployed Stage one of the largest protests of the Great Depression March on Wash. DC with 10,000 men to support veterans bill

5 Results Congress rejected the bonus bill & most veterans returned home
Around 2000 veterans remained & continued to protest Clash with police Hoover sends in Army to disband them with guns, tear gas. 2 veterans and 2 police killed – public shocked!

FDR was short on specifics about his plan FDR focused on attacking Hoover Promised a fairer distribution of wealth

8 The Results FDR won in convincing fashion FDR –
23 million popular votes 472 electoral votes Hoover – 16 million popular votes 59 electoral votes
