1 1.6 Relations Algebra AB

2 1.6 Relations Continued…. x = -1 $59 1. Solve for x.
1.6 Homework Answers Warm-up 2. As the tsunami has more time, the height of the tsunami increases. 3. As a student takes a test, the number of questions increase until they think about a problem, and then increase again until they get stuck on another problem. 4. {(0,9),(-8,3),(2,-6,),(1,4)} 5. {(9,5),(9,3),(-6,-5),(4,3), (8,-5),(4,3),(8,-5),(8,7)} 6. {(1,1),(2,1),(-1,-3),(-2,-2), (-3,-1)} 7. {(’02,35),(’03,36),(’04,29), (’05,51),(’06,41),(’07,26)} 1. Solve for x. 2. The price for an adult ticket is $5 and a student ticket is $2. Ms. Rehak’s class goes to see a play. There are 3 adults and 22 students in her class. What is the total cost for the class? x = -1 $59

3 Reverse!! Reverse!! Given the table, mapping, or graph, write out the set of ordered pairs.

4 Independent Vs. Dependent
Independent Variable: a variable that is not affected by another variable. Dependent Variable: a variable that is affected or relies on another variable.

5 Word Problems. CLIMATE In warm climates, the average amount of electricity used rises as the daily average temperature increases, and falls as the daily average temperature decreases. Identify the independent and the dependent variables for this function.

6 Word Problem The number of calories you burn increases as the number of minutes that you walk increases. Identify the independent and the dependent variables for this function.

7 Check your self. In a particular club, as membership dues increase, the number of new members decreases. Identify the independent and dependent variable in this function. A. The number of new members is the independent variable. The dues is the dependent variable. B. Membership dues is the independent variable. The number of new members is the dependent variable. C. x is the independent variable. y is the dependent variable. D. Both variables are independent.

8 Double check. The area of a square increases as the length of a side increases. Identify the independent and dependent variable in this function. A. The length of the side is independent, and the the area of the square is dependent. B. The area is independent, and the side length is dependent. C. Both variables are independent. D. Both variables are dependent.

9 Lets tell a story. The graph represents the temperature in Ms. Ling’s classroom on a winter school day. Describe what is happening in the graph.

10 Which story is true? The graph represents Macy’s speed as she swims laps in a pool. Describe what is happening in the graph. A. Macy is doing bobs. B. Macy’s speed increases as she crosses the length of the pool, but then decreases to zero when she turns around at the end of each lap. C. Macy is swimming at a constant speed. D. Macy’s speed continues to decrease.

11 Draw the story. The parking lot at school. Taking a bath.

12 Homework Quiz On a notecard, create a table and mapping give the following points {(1,1),(3,-2),(4,1),(-3,-2)}. Also, state the domain and range.

13 Switch to Functions.

14 Activity- HOMEWORK Sample 10 students in this class to collect your data. On colored paper – not poster paper, create the map, table, and graph for each set of data. Follow the directions 1-5 on the bottom of your paper.
