Classroom procedures for safekeeping of clay, equipment, and clean up.

2. Demonstrations
During demonstrations, students are required to gather around/stand close to the area where the instructor is demonstrating, and to take notes in their notebooks during the demo.

3. Group Critiques
Critiques are an important part of growing as an artist. The ability to critique artwork using the process of description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment based on evidence observed in artwork (and aesthetic theories) will need to be demonstrated by each student in the group; and therefore, participation is mandatory.

4. When to clean up
Due to the nature of working with clay, there will be many things that each person will need to do in the process of getting ready to leave each day.
Clean up will begin no earlier than 10 min. before bell.
If you have your own transportation, you may desire to stay after school to work on projects.

5. Personal Clay Supply
Because you will be purchasing your own clay supply, it is important that you take care of your clay properly. It is your responsibility.
Label your bag of clay with your name in permanent marker and store it on the shelf that has been assigned to you.
Make sure that all unused clay is returned to your bag, spray with water if necessary, push all excess air from the bag and close tightly.
Do not allow your bag to become punctured.

6. Clay Tools
All clay tools that have been used during a class period must be washed off in the water bucket. You should not be able to see any wet or dry clay on the tools. Tools should then be returned to the bucket they were gotten from and placed back on the shelf. Any tools not from the buckets should also be cleaned and returned to their original location.
Tools are washed in a bucket to prevent clay from going down the drain and clogging it.
If tools are not washed daily, dangerous mold will grow on them

7. Projects in Progress
It you are still working on a project, it should be placed on a small board to support the bottom and keep it flat.
(Optional) If the clay seems like it is becoming too dry, you may want to cover the piece with damp paper towels.
Place your piece and the board into a plastic grocery bag, then tightly close the bag so that air can not enter.
Place the piece in the closed bag on the shelf that was assigned to you. DO NOT leave it anywhere else in the room.

8. Completed Projects
Place the project on a board and cover loosely with a plastic bag.
Do not close the bag.
Place the project, board and bag on the shelf that was assigned to you.
The next day you may wish to “Clean UP” the piece when it is leather hard.
When you are sure that the piece is finished, cleaned, and has you name/initials on the bottom, you may place it on the cart in the kiln room

9. Sink
There will only be one sink that is to be used in this class. It is set up with a trap to prevent large pieces of clay from going down the drain.
There will be a bucket placed in the sink to pre rinse hands and tools.
Paper towels are located at the front of the room and near the sink, never leave paper towels in the sink.
Be patient and take turns. You have 10 min. to clean up, which is more than enough time. If there are people at the sink, work on other parts of the clean up procedures.
Remember to use the Bucket!!!

10. Sink Continued
The only thing to be left in the sink at the end of the class period should be a bucket and a screen.
All tools and equipment returned to their proper location, and sponges placed on the counter. Sponges left in the sink will also breed mold and odor. Please rinse out sponges.
If the sink is filling up with water, it is clogged. Let me know ASAP. Do not allow the water to continue running.

11. Tables, Chairs, and Floor
Never intentionally throw or wipe clay or clay dust on to the floor.
Look around on the floor for clay. If you see any, pick it up and throw it away
Use a wet sponge to clean off chairs if they have clay on them
Use a paper towel to clean all clay and clay dust off. Wipe it towards one end of the table, then into your hand and throw it away. Then use a damp sponge to clean off the entire table.
Use sponges whenever possible to save on the use of paper towels

12. In Conclusion
Taking care of your supplies will save you time and $$$$$$
Proper clean up will allow for a safe and healthy learning environment
If everyone pitches in it will be easy
