3 Rate of Change, Slope, & Direct variation are all basically the same thing.

4 Vocabulary Rate of change: describes how one quantity changes in relationship to another. Constant rate of change: when the rate of change between the two quantities is the same. (think proportional relationships) Example: Joe charges a rate of $10 per hour. The amount of money he makes changes depends on the number of hours he works. Slope: a rate of change between any two points on a line. Ask yourself: “how many lines up and over do I have to go to get from one ordered pair to another?” Direct variation: when two quantities have a constant ratio

5 Today’s Objective: Represent and identify constant rates of change.
7.RP.2 – Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities 7.RP.2b – Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships. 7.RP.2d – Explain what a point (x,y) on the graph of a proportional relationship means in terms of the situation, with special attention to the points (0, 0) and (1, r) where r is the unit rate.
