1 Finding a job in the UK as an international student
“Talking is the key […]. Ask potential employers about their clients and current projects, or other details which interest you. You should convince them that you are a motivated person. […] Motivate yourself each day and don’t let the rejections get you down .” Alex Omelchuk Graduate Project Manager at Arcadis Group Keep your eye on the goal… When I came to Birmingham to study my MSc in Construction Management, my goal was to find a job in the UK. I started job hunting early because of the competitive job market and time restrictions on my student visa. I used companies’ web sites, LinkedIn, recruitment agencies and social media to find and apply for jobs: even short - term programmes like placements. I found a part-time summer opportunity that has now led to a full-time job. Do your research… If you want to find a job in the UK, do your research and learn about your field: the companies; their projects; and their objectives. For example, I Googled the top 100 UK construction companies and followed them on social media. Follow the news of your chosen industry, go to events organised by Careers Network (and other parts of the University) and start talking to people. This will dramatically improve your communication skills and broaden your knowledge. Talking is the key: do not be embarrassed if your English is not perfect, your self- confidence and strength are what matter! Motivate yourself each day and don’t let the rejections get you down.
