Linked Yet Distinct (Ashleigh)
We know these two issues are linked yet distinct – share risk and protective factors, social justice issues with patriarchy and oppression as root causes Yet the way we often do our work and the way the general public understands our work are as two separate issues This is evidenced by two recent reports – SADI & Reciprocal Advancement
16
Sexual Assault Demonstration Initiative (SADI)
Released in 2017 Organizational change & programmatic change at 6 sites over a 4-year period Enhance sexual assault outreach, services, and community partnerships in dual/multi-service programs Found heavy focus on domestic violence, invisibility of sexual assault (Ashleigh) The SADI was funded by OVW to enhance SA outreach, services, and community partnerships in dual/multi-service program through organizational and programmatic change. The project involved 6 programs over a 4-year period and was focused on response and services to survivors, not prevention. Through community assessments, programs found that they were known for their domestic violence services and many community members were not even aware that they provided sexual assault services. “The profound invisibility of the sexual assault work done by these sites was especially remarkable or the four sites that had been doing sexual assault work for more than a decade. That there was so little community awareness, even in those communities, speaks to the dominance of domestic violence work in the eyes of the public. It also underscores that enhancing SA services entails redefining the organization itself, both internally and externally.”
17
Reciprocal Advancement
Released in 2015 Not enough funding Sexual violence often marginalized in dual organizations Significant and relevant distinctions between the two fields are not made (Leah)
18
How do you talk about the work you do?
Discussion Question How do you talk about the work you do? (Ashleigh & Leah)

Ideology - Reciprocal Advancement
“… the method of intentionally linking the fields of sexual assault and domestic violence, internally and externally, to leverage funding, bolster client services, and coordinate advocacy efforts to increase the visibility and sustainability of both fields.” (Leah)

Practice - Reciprocal Advancement
Integrate prevention strategies Create new opportunities for investment and identify intersections and linkages between fields Support local, state, and national leadership in intentional conversations and collaborations aimed at breaking down barriers and increasing communication (Leah)
22
Why don’t we work together?
Fields emerged at the same time with different political trajectories Field has become more scientific based and less politically based Has become more professionalized Social service v. social justice (Leah)
23
Threats to working together
Political winds Generational rifts Categorical funding Others (Leah)
24
Reframing (Leah)
25
Two Strategies – One Movement
(Leah)
26
Discussion Question How can both fields set the trends that will end sexual and intimate partner violence? (Ashleigh & Leah) What trends should we be setting? In 10 years will we stll be talking
27
Discussion Question What shifts in our thinking and approaches must change for both fields to remain relevant? (Ashleigh & Leah) What does the symbol suggest --- what does it mean?
28
Discussion Question How do we honor the differences between both fields while advancing them both? (Ashleigh & Leah) What does the symbol suggest --- what does it mean?
29
Reciprocal Advancement Through Prevention: A good start

Brands that tell a story
We are not supposed to think ONE or the OTHER but instead “a life free from violence” anti-sexism, anti-racism, a symbol about having each other’s backs. Unified field doesn’t privilege sexual or domestic violence one over the other but it encompasses all issues with shared roots. Include well known brand images here. And How to change a brand – what do you have to do after you have already established yourself in the marketplace in one thing what has to happen to reconfigure that? Mcdonalds, toyota, nike,
