1 August 22, 2016 Albert Einstein showed speech impairments until the age of nine. Young Einstein found difficulty in conversing with people and always muttered silently, framing sentences in his mind until he finally spoke them aloud after getting them right. He always had problems with spelling. The headmaster of the school suggested that Einstein should attend a trade school. His teachers also declared him as borderline retarded! Quote: “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” – Albert Einstein

5 Target: I can explain how economic, political, and cultural (religious) factors led Europeans to explore and colonize. Tips for Cornell Notes Take notes in your own words Leave space for revisions Abbreviate and use symbols Write in phrases (not complete sentences) Use bullet points, lists, etc… Use indentation to show relationship between ideas Important vs. trivial information Recognize cues, “This is important…,” “This may be on test…”

6 Topic/Objective: I can explain how economic, political, and cultural (religious) factors led Europeans to explore and colonize. Essential Question: Beginning in the late 1400’s why did European countries begin to enthusiastically back exploration? (world map) Go through chapter 2 with your group and make a list of as many explorers as you can along with WHAT they did. Not enough to know the WHAT. We need to understand the WHY? For example, why did Columbus end up “discovering” America?

7 What European motives led to Columbus’ discovery of America?
European countries motives for exploration and colonization beginning in the 15th century (1400’s) 1. Economic: faster trade routes (spices and other valuables in Asia); trade in Europe was unreliable b/c European countries tended to not get along 2. Political: constantly fighting to see who could be “top dog”; colonies = more wealth and power

8 What European motives led to Columbus’ discovery of America?
3. Religious: Spread Christianity over the whole Earth **All 3 motives are related. For example religious conflicts led to political Conflicts which often led to war. **Bottom Line – European countries did not like each other very much so they began to look outside of Europe to get the things they wanted and to Gain wealth, territory, and power for the home country. 4. Personal Glory and Riches
