1 How do people stay active in different parts of the world?
Search and deductive reasoning

2 About this Lesson This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Reading—Informational Text CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.5 Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.9 Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic. Nell Bang-Jensen is a teacher and theater artist living in Philadelphia, PA. Her passion for arts education has led her to a variety of roles including developing curriculum for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and teaching at numerous theaters and schools around the city. She works with playwrights from ages four to ninety on developing new work and is especially interested in alternative literacies and theater for social change. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she currently works in the Artistic Department of the Wilma Theater and, in addition to teaching, is a freelance actor and dramaturg. In 2011, Nell was named a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and spent her fellowship year traveling to seven countries studying how people get their names.

Can you find an example of this that came from somewhere outside of the US? Answers will vary. Students should think about activities they participate in, like a sports team or swim class, or even something as simple as spending time fishing with a grandparent, playing tennis on a Wii console, or walking a dog. They should then brainstorm whether people do these activities in other parts of the world. They might think about how there could be places where water (for swimming or fishing) is not available, or where people might play different sports. (For example, in the UK and India, they play cricket, but American football is less common.) They might also think about activities that could happen no matter where you live: like walking. Encourage them to think about why the activities people engage in might be different (reasons like landscape or climate of a place, culture, access to resources, etc…) © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. Can you find an example of this that came from somewhere outside of the US? (Possible queries: “staying fit around the world”, “exercise in other countries, cold weather”). Students should conduct a search about staying active in cold climates. Specific examples will vary, but after reading the description of one place or another, students should use the Bing/Maps search bar in order to locate this country on a map. For example, from around-world-stay-fit.html: Ice hockey is the national sport of Canada. As its name implies, it’s a sport that’s played on ice. The game involves two teams of six active players each, who use a hockey stick to shoot a puck across the ice while trying to score a goal. The puck is similar to a ball but is flat on the bottom to help it smoothly glide across the ice. Every player has to have balance, coordination, and know how to ice skate very well. Although it is most popular in colder climates like Canada, ice hockey is now played all over the world. It is played here in the United States from Los Angeles to Chicago, and even in sunny Florida! Do you have an ice hockey team in your town? Or perhaps an ice skating rink nearby where YOU can learn to skate? Students should then conduct a search using the Bing/Maps tool, in order to locate Canada on a map and visualize where it is. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Students should conduct a search about staying active in hot climates. Specific examples will vary, but after reading the description of one place or another, students should use the Bing/Maps search bar in order to locate this country on a map. For example, from world-little-passports-style.html: The majority of Australia’s population lives near the coast, so guess what sport is popular in this country? Surfing! Australia’s surfing culture is inspired by the surrounding waters. They enjoy the Southern Ocean in the South, the Indian Ocean in the West, the Pacific Ocean in the East, as well as the Timor, Tasman, Coral and other seas. Australian children learn early on how to respect the water and look for any dangers. Their beautiful beaches and big waves are a surfer’s paradise! Students should then conduct a search using the Bing/Maps tool, in order to locate Australia on a map and visualize where it is. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. (Possible queries: “staying fit around the world”, “exercise in other countries, religious practice”, “exercises that came from religious practice”). Answers will vary. For example, from Most people are surprised to learn that the physical practice of yoga as we know it is not actually ancient. Yoga in India was traditionally a mental and spiritual practice that incorporated special breathing techniques while in a sitting or standing posture. The type of exercise that comes to mind when we think of the word “yoga” (incorporating different postures called asanas, in combination with measured breathing) was not developed in India until the early 20th century. Nevertheless, yoga is now practiced very widely in India and all over the world as a way to promote overall mind-body fitness. It strengthens and stretches the muscles, increases flexibility and reduces stress. Students should then conduct a search using the Bing/Maps tool, in order to locate India on a map and visualize where it is. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. For example, from world: The origin of belly dancing is actively debated among dance enthusiasts. But, the dance form of belly dance comes from the Middle East. Also known as Rak Baladi, it’s a social dance form that is performed among all ages and genders at social gatherings. The basic technique requires making a circular motion with one isolated area of the body while moving in tune with a musical rhythm. One must engage the core to isolate each muscle group and control it to perform such movements. Students should then conduct a search using the Bing/Maps tool, in order to locate the Middle East and visualize what countries are a part of it. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
