Electricity is produced by a TURBINE turning to power a GENERATOR. The type of power that we use to turn the turbine is the choice that we have.

All types of energy have advantages and disadvantages. Disadvantages are also known as limiting factors. For each energy source listed below there are advantages and disadvantages of using it. Fossil fuels Hydro Wind Geothermal Solar

What are Renewable Resources?
Renewable Resources can be replaced by nature at a rate close to the rate at which they are used.

Geothermal Energy Comes from the heat in the Earth’s Interior.
The heat in the Earth’s interior is used to heat water to make steam to turn the turbine to produce electricity.

Biomass Uses plant and animal waste
Decreases the amount of organic matter thrown in landfills.

Hydroelectric Power Uses moving water to turn the turbines.

Nuclear Fission Uranium atoms are split to create energy.
One limiting factor is the waste produced by nuclear power. It produces radioactive waste.

Resources that exist in a fixed amount Nonrenewable are renewed very slowly or not at all.

Nonrenewable Energy Resources
A. Fossil Fuels are nonrenewable and may cause pollution They are relatively cheap and easy to extract and use. (Examples include: Coal, Oil, Petroleum, and Natural Gas) B. Nuclear power: energy is created by atomic fission. It produces very little air pollution, but it does produce toxic waste that takes millions of years to decompose. It uses the radioactive mineral Uranium, which is nonrenewable.

Inexhaustible Resources
Resources that are unlimited and cannot be used up by human activity such as wind, water, and sunlight.

Synthetic Materials Man-Made in a lab using chemical processes.
During the chemical reaction the atoms of the reactants unbond, rearrange, and then rebond to form a product. In a chemical reaction mass is conserved. This means that the TYPE and NUMBER of atoms in the reactants equals the TYPE and NUMBER of atoms in the product.

It is an advantage to produce a synthetic materials when they are easier, cheaper, and less destructive to make than to get it from nature.

Synthetic Example: When we are out in the sun and our bodies make Vitamin D, the vitamin is considered to be natural. But the exact same compound made in factories that you can purchase as a vitamin pill is considered to be synthetic.
