Act 168 of 2014 made changes that impact education students
Students must pass a basic skills test in reading, math, and writing before being accepted into the education program. Effective August 1, 2015

To be accepted you MUST meet the Basic Skills Test Requirement
To continue to take education courses above the foundation level, you must be formally accepted into the Education Department of CHC. Why is this important? To be accepted you MUST meet the Basic Skills Test Requirement AND… (see next slide) There is now a new “mix and match” option. Find out what that means later in this presentation! Check out p. 10 – 14 for information on BST.

FRESHMEN AND NEW TRANSFERS
All freshmen are required to take the Basic Skills Tests before entering sophomore year. All new transfer students who enter CHC with 60 or more credits have only 1 semester to take and pass all the Basic Skills Test, unless exempt based on your High School SAT or ACT scores.

#1 Meet with your assigned education advisor
prior to registration each semester. Sophomores- Oct. 26/Freshmen – Oct. 27 Athletes in Spring Semester may register early. Keep track of your progress by checking your audit often! See page 5 for directions on obtaining your audit on MyCHC (portal). You are responsible for bringing the following to each meeting Copy of Your Advising Sheet (found on the portal) Benchmark Progress Sheet (p. 7 – 9 in handbook) #2 Obtain all clearances as listed on the Clearance Reference Sheet (found on the portal) You will need these for your first Field Experience and must renew them before student teaching.

#3 To be eligible to apply to the Education Department, you must have earned a minimum of 48 credits with a GPA of 2.8 or a maximum of 60 credits with a GPA of 3.0 Note: Candidate must be formally accepted by 60 credits in order to continue in the education program. #4 Six credits in English 3 credits in Writing Composition (ENGL 101 or higher) 3 credits in Literature (British or American) #5 Six credits of Math EDP4/EDML: MATH 231/or 115 and 232 EDSC: MATH 115 or higher

#6 Qualifying scores for basic skills tests (BST) in reading, math and writing: There is now a “mix and match” option for passing the BST. Passing scores from vendors can be combined. Pearson Pre-Service Academic Performance Assessments (PAPA), part of PA ED Certification Tests (PECT) or Educational Testing Services CORE, (Praxis series) or qualifying scores on the SAT or ACT as required by PDE to be exempt from taking the basic skills tests. Brand new option for math!!! If you take Math 232 and pass with a B or higher, you will be exempt from taking the Math Basic Skills Test.

#7 Documentation of 20 hours of observation and participation in educationally related settings if applying after 48 credits, BUT 40 hours are required at 60 credits. (part of FE courses) Field Experience I or II (see advising sheet) (strongly recommended that FE I be taken before FE II) AND Successful completion of at least one additional pre-professional education foundation course as listed on the Pre-Professional Benchmark.
