Caesarean section: A surgical operation for delivering a child by cutting through the wall of the mother's abdomen. – origin: from the story that Julius Caesar was delivered by this method. Contraction: Movements made by the involuntary muscles in the uterus during labour. Dilation: When the opening of the vagina becomes wider and more open, so that the baby can come out. Embryo: Multicellular organism produced when the zygote containing DNA of the two parents divides itself numerous times. Fertilisation: When an egg cell and a sperm unite in the Fallopian tubes or in the uterus and form a zygote. Infant formula: Modified cow’s milk or soya milk providing necessary nutrients

Labour: The process of giving birth. Its stages are: dilation, birth and afterbirth Lactation: The period when babies get their nourishment from their mother’s milk Menstruation: Minor bleeding that occurs when the egg cell is not fertilised and leaves the body through the vagina. Premature: Baby born before term who is kept in incubators until they develop and grow stronger. Puberty: Life stage between infancy and maturity in which the reproductive system matures and secondary sexual characteristics appear. Zygote: The first cell of the new human being which has all the DNA of the two parents.
