1 Forensic Anthropology Determining Height from human remains
Mrs. MacWilliams CSI Forensic Science

2 Height Determination using FEMUR (Skeletons 1 & 2)
Take measured length of femur in mm and change to cm (move decimal one place to the left). Complete table for all ancestries, both male and female. Use calculations in table.

3 Example for a Caucasoid male FEMUR: Length of femur = 445 mm = 44
Example for a Caucasoid male FEMUR: Length of femur = 445 mm = 44.5 cm 2.32(44.5) = cm Confidence Interval: cm = cm cm = cm ** Write in “height in cm” BOX cm – cm In feet and inches: **Write in “Height (in.)(height in cm/2.54)” BOX cm/2.54 = ~65 in = 5’5” cm/2.54 = ~68 in = 5’8” **Write in “Approx. Height (ft. & in.)” BOX 5’5” – 5’8”

4 Height Determination using TIBIA (Skeleton 3)
Take measured length of tibia in mm and change to cm (move decimal one place to the left). Complete table for all ancestries, both male and female. Use calculations in table.

5 Example for a Caucasoid male Tibia: Length of tibia= 355 mm = 35
Example for a Caucasoid male Tibia: Length of tibia= 355 mm = 35.5 cm 2.42(35.5) = cm Confidence Interval: cm – 400 = cm cm = cm ** Write in “height range (cm)” BOX cm – cm In feet and inches: **Write in “Height (in.)(height in cm/2.54)” BOX cm/2.54 = ~65 in = 5’5” cm/2.54 = ~68 in = 5’8” **Write in “Approx. Height (ft. & in.)” BOX 5’5” – 5’8”

6 Height Determination using Humerus
Take measured length of humerus in mm and change to cm (move decimal one place to the left). Complete table for all ancestries, both male and female. Use calculations in Humerus Table the same way you calculated femur results.

7 FINAL HEIGHT DETERMINATION
USE THE SEX AND ETHNICITY/RACE YOU DETERMINED. USE THE MINIMUM VALUE FROM THE FEMUR/TIBIA or HUMERUS (which ever is the smallest) USE THEMAXIMUM VALUE FROM THE FEMUR/TIBIA or HUMERUS (which ever is the largest) GIVE A RANGE IN BOTH CM AND FT/IN
