2 There are three types of phrases
I. Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase begins with a preposition 1. a preposition is a word that shows a relationship between two nouns: place or time 2. Doghouse words ______ the doghouse p.368 common

B. Prepositional phrases end with a noun or pronoun. It is called the OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION. 1. It answers the question who or what after a preposition 2. Example: near the wall ASK who or what after prep Answer will be the object- and it will be the end of the phrase

5 C. There are two types of prepositional phrases
1. Adjective phrases: usually modify the word it follows LOCATION_ LOCATION_ LOCATION a. Answers the same question adjectives answer 1)Which one 2)What kind 3)How many b.The girl by the water sings well. By what? object By the doghouse Which girl? The one by the water.

6 2. The adverb phrase a. Modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb
b.Usually modifies the word it follows c.Any prepositional phrase beginning a sentence modifies the verb d.Answers the following question- just like adverbs 1)Where 2)When 3)Why 4)How 5)How often 6)What extent Example: She ate by the water. Example: By the water I sing. Example: Mother is good at tennis.

7 D When the prepositional phrases are removed- a sentence remains.
Near the window one of the girls saw an airplane in the clouds. What is the kernel sentence when the prepositional phrases are removed? How many phrases are there?
