1 5 Changes of States of Matter
How does matter change its state?

2 Changes of State A change of state is the change of a substance from one physical form to another. Identity does not change. Particles of the substance move differently at each state and have different amounts of energy.

3 Change of State Sublimation ?

7 1. Melting: Solid to Liquid
Melting is the change of state from solid to liquid by adding energy to the substance. The temperature at which the solid changes to liquid is the melting point. Elements have their own unique melting point (this is a property of matter) Melting is an endothermic change because energy is gained by the substance as it changes state; energy is added.

8 2. Freezing: Liquid to Solid
The change of state from a liquid to a solid is called freezing. The temperature at which liquid changes to a solid is the freezing point. Freezing is an exothermic change because energy is removed from the substance as it changes state; energy is lost.

10 3. Evaporation & Boiling Evaporation is the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas. Boiling is the change of a liquid to a vapor, or gas, throughout a liquid. Boiling occurs when the pressure inside the bubbles equals the pressure outside the bubbles. The temperature at which a substance boils is the boiling point.

14 4. Condensation: Gas to Liquid
Condensation is a change of state from a gas to liquid. In a gas, large numbers of particles clump together is form a liquid. Is this an endothermic change or an exothermic change?

15

16 5. Sublimation: Solid to Gas
Sublimation is the change of state in which a solid changes directly into a gas. In sublimation is there an endothermic change or exothermic change?

17

18 Change of Temperature vs Change of State
The temperature of a substance does not change until the change of state is complete. The temperature of a substance is related to the speed of the substance’s particles.
