Lesson 4 Heat Transfer and the Movement of Air Latent Heat

HEAT TRANSFER AND THE MOVEMNET OF AIR
Warm surfaces radiate heat energy and warm air above them Warm air is less dense than cool air and has a tendency to rise creating an unstable air mass Cool surface absorb heat energy and cool the air above them Cool air is more dense and has a tendency to sink, creating a stable air mass Water evaporate from heated surfaces, and the rising water vapor cools, condenses and forms clouds.

Latent Heat: Heat required to change one substance from one state to another

Vocabulary Air Masses: Bodies of air with nearly uniform conditions of temperature and humidity Temperature: Indicates the amount of heat energy in matter Heat: form of energy that transfers because of temperature differences. Stable or Unstable: An air mass is stable when its temperature does not decrease with altitude. It is unstable when its temperature decreases rapidly.
