1 Classification P

2 Taxonomy Study of the classification of organisms.
3 Domains Bacteria, Archea, Eukaryotes

3 5 Kingdoms Animalia, Plantae, Protista, Fungi, Monera

4 Animalia

5 Kingdom Animalia Multicellular Cells have a nucleus
No cell walls or chloroplasts Cannot do photosynthesis Examples: Worms, Jellyfish, Insects, Lions, Snakes, Frogs, Humans

6 Plantae

7 Kingdom Plantae Multicellular Cells have a nucleus
All plants do photosynthesis All plants contain chloroplasts and cell walls Examples: Trees, Flowers, Grass

8 Monera

9 Two categories- Fill in characteristics for Eubacteria in table!!!
Archaebacteria

10 Kingdom Eubacteria Thick cell wall Single celled – Unicellular
No nucleus Authotroph/heterotroph Examples: Streptococci and E. Coli

11 Examples: thermophiles and halophiles
Archaebacteria Thin cell walls Unicellular Autroph/heterotroph Examples: thermophiles and halophiles

12 Fungi

13 Kingdom Fungi Multicellular Cells have a nucleus
Do not do photosynthesis Absorb food from the ground Have cell walls Examples: Mushrooms, Penicillin, Molds

14 Protista

15 Kingdom Protista Unicellular and Multicellular (One organism made up of several cells) Cells have a nucleus Some protists can do photosynthesis (have chloroplasts) Protists do not have cell walls Microscopic and Live in water Examples – Amoeba, Paramecium, Euglena

16 Classification All species are given a scientific name, which is the same all over the world. Why is that important? Puma, Mountain Lion, Cougar – all of these are Felis concolor

17 Kingdom – Phylum – Class – Order – Family – Genus – Species
Kings Play Chess On Funny Green Squares Your FULL classification as human – Animalia, Chordata, Mamalia, Primates, Hominidae, Homo sapiens

18 This is called Binomial Nomenclature
Means Two part naming First part is the genus, second is the species This system was conceived by Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus.

19 Most names are in Latin and derived from the area the organism was discovered, or the person who discovered it. Sometimes they are named for a characteristic of the organism. Tyrannosaurus rex means Tyrant-Lizard King.

20 The green Anole lizard is found in the Carolinas and is named Anolis carolinensis.
One of the finches Darwin studied is named Rhea darwinii.

21 Dichotomous Key Demonstration as a class
