1 Introduction to Integers and Absolute Value

2 Definition Positive number – a number greater than zero. 1 2 3 4 5 6

3 Definition Negative number – a number less than zero. -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5 6

4 Definition Opposite Numbers – numbers that are the same distance from zero in the opposite direction -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5 6

5 Additive Inverse Opposite Numbers are Additive Inverses!
These are a pair of numbers whose sum is zero -3 +3 = 0 3+ -3 = 0 = 0 =0 = 0

6 Definition Integers – Integers are all the whole numbers and all of their opposites (additive inverses) on the negative number line including zero. -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5 6

7 Hint If you don’t see a negative or positive sign in front of a number it is positive. 9 = +9

8 Definition The absolute value of a number (I x I) is the distance between that number and zero on a number line. It doesn't matter whether we are in the positive direction or the negative direction, we just care about how far away we are. Absolute value is shown by placing two vertical bars around the number as follows: I 3 I I -5 I

9 Using Number Line I 3 I = 3 3 is three units away from zero I -5 I = 5
5 is five units away from zero 5 4 3 2 1 1 2 3

10 Examples I -4 I = I 4 I = I 26 I = I -26 I = I -423 I = I 423 I =
What do we notice about numbers and their opposites?
