Welcome to Room 23! September 23, 2016 Important Dates
Language Arts During language arts block, we have been learning about what schools were like long ago, comparing them to our school today! We read an expository text (see if your child can tell you what that is ) or in other words, a nonfiction book, and discussed the characteristics of a nonfiction book and the difference between facts and fiction. To help students better understand what they are reading, we focused on the comprehension strategy asking questions. Students wrote “I wonder..” questions about something they read from either a read aloud or a book they read on their own. We also wrote photo stories which are pictures that tell a story! Science In science we have been continuing with our unit on the Solar System! This week we learned about the characteristics and phases of the moon and astronauts! Word Study We have still been practicing the short /a/ sound. We manipulated words with this sound and practiced hearing it and using it to spell different words from last week. This week we practiced – ag & -ap word family words, such as wag, rag, cap, map, etc. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with the short /a/ sound. We added new words to our word wall, please practice these at home. Alternates for the week:
Update: Please refer to my Devon Elementary teacher page often as I will be putting extra resources on there and these weekly newsletters. You will also find information about our class there. ( ) Peace Day On Wednesday, Devon had an assembly about Peace Day. We talked about what Peace Day is, heard the word “peace” spoken in 25 different languages from students at Devon, and one person from every class in every grade shared his/her peace pledge with the entire school! Each student in the class wrote their own peace pledges as well. Some students wrote…. “Peace means that everything is happy.” “Peace means playing outside.” “I pledge to pick up trash.” Ask your child what his/her peace pledge was and peace means to him/her! Math Tuesday, we started chapter 3: Addition Facts to 10. In this chapter, students will learn basic addition facts and various strategies that can be used to solve them. We’ve learned the counting on strategy, number bonds, and how to use a ten frame to help solve basic addition facts. Ask them if they can show or tell you a few of the ones that we’ve been learning! At the beginning of each new chapter I will be sending home the home/school connections. These are optional. It’s up to you if you’d like your child to complete the worksheet. I will be more than happy to look over it, however it is your choice and not mandatory by me.
