1 Living By Chemistry SECOND EDITION
Unit 1: ALCHEMY Matter, Atomic Structure, and Bonding

2 Lesson 23: Alchemy of Paint
Transition Metal Chemistry

3 Key Question What types of compounds are made from transition metals?

4 You will be able to: recognize transition metal compounds and their names determine the charge on transition metal ions given their chemical formula

5 Discussion Notes Many of the paint pigments that artists historically used and continue to use are ionic metal-nonmetal compounds. (We will not be doing this lab due to the toxicity of working with heavy metals)

6 Transition Metal Ion names/formulas
Transition metals can have multiple types of ions. They’re still cations, though. Naming transition metal compounds have a special designation—use of Roman Numerals to indicate the charge of the metal Examples: Lead (IV) Oxide would be PbO2 Iron (III) Oxide would be Fe2O3

7 From formula to name What would be the name for CoO? First, start with your known ion--oxygen oxygen’s ionic symbol is O-2 if oxygen is -2, then cobalt must be +2 Name: Cobalt (II) Oxide

8 From formula to name What is the ionic compound name for Cu2O3? Oxygen’s charge 3(-2) = -6 Therefore: Copper’s charge is +6/2 = +3 Name: Copper (III) Oxide

9 From formula to name Now You Try Given: What would be the name for FeCl3? Start with your known ion, Chlorine… Cl has a -1 charge. Since there’s 3 Chlorines, 3(-1) = -3 Therefore, iron must be +3 Name: Iron (III) Chloride
