Capitalism: An economic system in which the means of production in a society are privately owned and business organizations provide goods for a market driven by the forces of supply and demand based off of the concept of "laissez-faire" or "hands -off“ developed by Adam Smith in “The Wealth of Nations”. The US has a capitalist society.

Mercantilism: an economic system in which national strength is increased through exports; a nation's wealth is measured through how much gold/silver they have. Maintain a balance of trade, not a trade deficit. From the 16th, 17th, 18th century, it evolved into capitalism.

Socialism: Intended as a system where the people, not private individuals (businessmen), own and operate all businesses/means of production. Equal distribution of wealth Today = an economic system in which collective/governmental control or ownership is advocated; there is some private property and the government controls most of the means of production in that society. “Everyone gets a piece of the pie”. Opposes capitalism.

Marxism (“Scientific Socialism”):
Developed by Karl Marx and Frederich Engels in “The Communist Manifesto”. Based on history, it says the class struggle is inevitable. Gap between the have and have-nots will continue to get larger. a mode of social, economic, and historical analysis; Wants a classless society. It was initially like socialism but then changed. Workers control production, violence may be necessary. What communism was supposed to be. {Community}

Communism: Extreme form of socialism in which the means of production are owned by the workers (proletariat) as a whole rather than by individuals in that society. No private property. Opposes capitalism. Today = a governmental system in which one party has control of industry and reign of terror over its people. Achieves its goals by violence.

Totalitarianism: a modern autocratic (dictator) government in which the state involves itself in all aspects of society, including the daily lives of the citizens. State #1, People = Last Fascism- form of Totalit. which a dictator creates a society by strict control of the people. Marked by extreme patriotism (JINGOISM). Allows for capitalism & some private businesses. Nazism- form of Totalit. with extreme nationalists who wanted to create a perfect society. Oppose capitalism. Utilitarianism: The doctrine or belief that the greatest good of the greatest numbers should be the purpose of human conduct. The government has some involvement in social programs. Socialist idea, inspired utopianism.

Utopianism: An attempt to create an ideal society based on Thomas More’s book (1516) of a “perfect society”. Having a self sufficient community without classes where all worked together. They shared all property. Robert Owen set one up in New Lanark, Scotland that was successful. Other attempts in the US failed.

Anarchism: a political philosophy wanting to rid society of laws or superior authority; opposes the ideas of both capitalism and communism No laws, rules, regulation, or govt. A free society. Yeah, like this works!! Clip

Nationalism: Based on the concept that a nation is made up of people held together by the bonds of common language, customs, culture, and history and who, because of these bonds, should share the same government. Also further defined as being the love and devotion that one has for his or her country. GO USA!
