A serious illness that causes feelings of extreme sadness and hopelessness that last more than two weeks. Referred to as the “common cold” of psychological disorders. Most Common Causes: Brain chemistry Medications Heredity Difficult life events

Major Depressive Disorder
A person, for no apparent reason, experiences two or more weeks of depressive moods. Includes feelings of worthlessness and diminished interest or pleasure in most activities.

(lesser know) Dysthymic Disorder
Suffering from mild depression every day for at least two years. Type of low-grade depression. Harder to identify, so it typically goes untreated

Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that occurs in relation to the seasons, most commonly beginning in winter. The cause of SAD is not known, but it is thought to be related to numerous factors, including: Lack of sunlight Inconsistent Body Temperature Hormone Deficiencies Symptoms: Depressed State (Fall & Winter) Carbohydrate Cravings Decreased Interest in Activities Increased Weight Gain Withdrawl from Social Group Lack of Energy Levels
