2 Biography Background Industrial designer and Media artist
Born in Warsaw, Poland Born April 16, 1943 Immigrated to Guelph, Ontario in 1977 Mother was Jewish Father was Bohdan Wodiczko

3 Biography Education Was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1967 Graduated in 1968 with degree in industrial design Attended a 2 year program at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1976 Taught at the Ontario College of Art in 1979 and University of Guelph Now teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and lives in NYC

4 Biography Inspiration Has no family on his mother’s side
Born during WWII Grew up in a soviet occupied Poland Father was a musician Wants people to know about war

5 Hiroshima Projection Summary: Inspired by the Hiroshima Art Prize
Prize given to those who inspire peace “to prevent the world from conflict, we must sustain a certain kind of adversarial life in which we are struggling with our problems in public” Took place at the Hiroshima A-Bomb dome foundation

6 Hiroshima Projection Duration:
Done the day of the anniversary of the bombing (August 6th, 1945) in 1999 Took place at night Involved many generations

7 Hiroshima Projection Interactivity:
Victims of the bombing would tell story “non-Japanese” would tell their story Grand children would tell how they are affected Man found a bike lock and kept it

8 Hiroshima Projection Hybridization:
Victim’s hands projected onto building Building and hands reflected onto water Symbolizes water as a witness and hope

1st: Audience listens, and somewhat understands

10 Abraham Lincoln: War Veteran Projection
Summary: Lincoln Memorial built in 1870 14 soldiers and family members remember their stories to reconcile “Lincoln was also known for his humility” Through the stories, the audience would hear a will to persevere

11 Abraham Lincoln: War Veteran Projection
Duration: Started on November 8th, 2012 Ended on December 9th, 2012 Videos last up to four hours ( pm) Videos would span across generations

Interactivity: Viewers would have to look up at the statue Symbolic for them looking up to their heroes Bring life to the Union Square again

Hybridization: People are projected onto Lincoln memorial statue Statue becomes animated Veterans tell their stories (theme of trauma) Speaking allows them to be free from “permanent victim status”

Point of View: 3rd: Audience looks up to the animated statue Audience somewhat understands what it is like for the veterans 1st: Veterans show that alienation is unjust Veterans become reintegrated into society Some trauma is let go of

Summary: Project took place at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston Krzysztof interviewed veterans to prepare the project Veteran is redefined: Person who lived in a war zone Point of the project is to show the 2 sides of a conflict

Duration: Started in 2009, November 4th Ended in 2010, March 28th Simulations would last 8 minutes

Interactivity: Viewers would somewhat experience what it is like in an Iraqi city Viewers are in a warehouse Daily sounds are heard Chaos ensues after words from a helicopter, explosions, etc.

Hybridization: 8 minute audio track is used 3 projections on walls Speech from President Obama is used Actors consisted of Iraqi-Americans, soldiers, and plain actors

Point of View: Viewers experience what it is like for a ‘veteran’ Viewer cannot experience loss due to anonymity
