Doing your best for every student –
differentiated objectives and activities
2
Objectives Define a learning aim and a learning objective.
State the difference between a learning aim and a learning objective. Write differentiated SMART learning objectives which will enable all learners to progress and achieve in your subject area. Demonstrate a range of differentiated activities/resources which can be used to enhance learning in your subject area.
3
What is differentiation?
4
An approach to teaching and learning that attempts to ensure that all students learn well, despite their many differences Dauncey, P. (2003) Matrix Theory into Practice Ltd training session handout ..the process of identifying and addressing the different needs, interests and abilities of all learners to give them the best possible chance of achieving their learning goals. Standards Unit (2005) Linking theory to practice: Continuing Professional Development, Teacher and trainer handbook
5
Why differentiate? Although students may be broadly at the same level of attainment they may vary greatly in …… Motivation Learning style Expectation
6
Assumptions If teachers assume that all their students are the same they will limit the learning experience This prevents achievement
7
Differentiation in practice
Individual or small groups Variety of activities/ways of learning Differentiate by Outcome Content Resource Task Response Support
8
How does the need for differentiation feed into your planning
How does the need for differentiation feed into your planning? Give examples of how you use differentiation in your own classroom.

RESOURCES METHODS EVALUATION ASSESSMENT NEED Aims, objectives, content Need Methods, resources Assessment, evaluation
10
What is an aim? Aims describe the overall purpose of a
complete learning sequence. They are usually long term, difficult to evaluate and expressed in general ways. For example: To improve understanding. To impart information. To modify beliefs, attitudes or standards. To encourage.
11
What is an objective? These are specific action statements.
They are achievable stepping stones that lead towards more generally expressed aims. They are specific in their level of description. They state in detail the hoped-for changes in the learner.
12
Objectives have three functions:
They should be written in ways that allow the teacher and learner to make robust judgements as to whether or not they have been achieved. Objectives have three functions: They provide an overall structure for learning/teaching. They help in detailed planning. They act as a basis for appropriate assessment.
13
Differentiated objectives
Thinking of three of your students, write three differentiated objectives for one of your sessions. What changes could you make to your session to ensure that these students can progress and achieve their objective?
14
Differentiation - Benefits for the Learner
Every student has an opportunity to succeed Students can discover personal strengths Will be less bored and confused
15
Benefits to the Tutor More control over individual learner progress
A greater reward for allowing equal opportunities for success
