Welcome, My name is Martha and I am here today to speak to you about advanced directives.

2 What are advance directives?
Advance directives are special types of consent that communicate your wishes to be treated- or not treated- should you become unable to communicate these wishes. First, what are advance directives? They are special types of consent that communicate your wishes to be treated- or not treated- should you become unable to communicate these wishes.

3 Major types of advance directives
DPOA-HCD – durable power of attorney for healthcare decisions Living will DNR – Do not resuscitate order There are three major types of advance directives that we are going to talk about today. They are DPOA-HCD or durable power of attorney for healthcare decisions, living will and Do not resuscitate orders.

4 DPOA-HCD DPOA-HCD -Durable power of attorney for healthcare decisions When a person while still competent designates another person to be their proxy. Durable power of attorney for healthcare decisions is you, while still competent, designate another person to be your proxy- meaning they will make the healthcare decisions on your behalf.

5 Living will A living will is set up by a fully competent adult that express their wishes regarding treatment in case they become afflicted with certain conditions. A living will is set up in case you become afflicted with certain conditions like a terminal condition or a vegetative state that makes you unable to commincate your wishes for treatment. Living wills often address extraordinary measures like whether you want ventilator support or nutrition.

6 DNR DNR- do not resuscitate order- an order written by the treating physician stating that in the event the patient suffers cardiac or pulmonary arrest, cardiopulmonary resuscitation should not be attempted. A DNR are written orders stating that in the event of cardiac or pulmonary arrest that no resuscitation should be attempted.
