6. The heart The heart is a muscle. This muscle is call the myocardium
Contractions by the myocardium pump blood through the circulatory system

7. Heart Structure Heart has a right and left side
Right half pumps blood to the lungs to get oxygen
Left half pumps blood throughout the bod

8. Circulation through the body
The heart functions as two separate pumps
Oxygen-rich blood flows into left side of the heart and pumped through the rest of the body
Blood returns to the heart oxygen-poor.
Oxygen-poor blood sent to the lungs to become oxygen-rich

9. Heart Disease Leading cause of death in America
Heart cells dies as a result of lack of oxygen
Lack of oxygen = Heart attack
Why does this happen?

10. Blood Vessels
Blood moving from the heart flows through 3 types of blood vessels.
Arteries:
-Large vessels that carry blood from the heart to tissues in the body
-have thick walls to protect
from pressure of heart beat

Bring nutrients and oxygen to the cells
Veins
-Blood returns to the heart
through the veins
