Case Study C was referred to Step Change for conflict within the family. C was at risk of sexual exploitation. C has a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and the family were struggling to understand and manage her behaviour. The family were concerned that the young person’s behaviour would have a negative impact on her younger sister. All of these factors left the family feeling helpless and unable to cope with the behaviour the young person was displaying and as a result, they had resorted to dropping the young person off at the Civic Centre and A&E stating they wanted her placed in care.

Family Feedback C says she feels a lot happier at home and everything is a lot better. When asked what changed she feels has been made, she says that she behaves better and her and mum compromises more now. C informed that she is getting on well at school and with her peers. She doesn't feel she gets into as much trouble any more. C’s relationship with mum, dad, and siblings has improved and she is happy about this. Both children noticed the change in the household and describe things at home as brilliant and much better. SW - I have seen considerable shift in the family and the FFT intervention has enabled this family to have a positive outcome and do not require continued social services support. Mrs A is delighted with the outcome and is thankful for the support FFT were able to provide. SDQ scores increased. Family reported feeling more able to cope and improved relationships © Action for Children 2015
