1 BECOMING AN EXPERT IN SURVEY DESIGN By Ghania Zgheib EDIT 732

2 Welcome to the Survey Design Online Course
At the end of this course you should be able to: Evaluate a survey with the focus on effective question wording. Create an effective survey format for the intended sample population. Administer the survey appropriately.

3 Schedule This is a seven-week course. It will be divided as follows:
Week 1: May 31 - June Introduction to Surveys Week 2: June 7- June Evaluating Surveys Week 3: June 14 - June 20 Designing Surveys Week 4: June 21 - June 27 Designing Surveys Week 5: June 28 - July Implementing Surveys Week 6: July 5 - July Follow up on Implementing the Surveys Week 7: July 12 - July Reflection                          The following slides will guide you through the learning activities.

4 Week 1- Introduction to Surveys
May 31 - June 6                          During this week, you are invited to read the two articles below about designing appropriate surveys. Follow the links to both articles, and then follow the instructions on the following slide. Designing Surveys Validity and Reliability of Surveys As you read the articles, make sure to focus on the following : The characteristics of a good survey The necessary steps to design a survey The most effective steps to implement a survey

5 Week 1- Introduction to Surveys May 31 - June 6
After you have read the articles, you are invited to participate in an online discussion through blackboard. Click on Blackboard to access online discussion. Insert your GMU Username and Password. In your course menu, you will find Survey Design; you are enrolled in this course. Click on the discussion link of this course, and respond to the following question by creating a new message under Introduction to Surveys: “According to the readings, what are the characteristics of a good survey? What are the necessary steps to design a survey? What are the most effective steps to implement a survey” You are expected to post your responses on Blackboard by 12 am on June 6. The discussion will be monitored by a GMU Professor Dr. Alan Trump who will respond to the discussions and reinforce them. The professor will also respond to all your questions and will help you understand the material.

6 Week 2- Evaluating Surveys June 7- June 13
During this week, you are invited to look at sample surveys and also participate in an online discussion through Blackboard. Enter the discussions forum. Please respond to the questions related to the Sample Surveys below under Evaluating Surveys. Student Satisfaction Faculty Satisfaction Course Evaluation You are expected to post your responses by 12 am on June 13. The discussion will be monitored by a GMU Professor Dr. Alan Trump who will respond to the discussions and reinforce them. The professor will also respond to all your questions and will help you understand the material.

7 Week 3- Designing Surveys June 14 – June 20
Based on the readings, first steps in designing a survey are: Collecting data about the sample population you are designing the survey for Identifying the goals you want this survey to measure Setting the questions that will measure the goal Work with the staff members of your office as a group to complete the activity below. Click on Planning a Survey, and complete the chart to plan your survey. Then attach the form to Designing a Survey discussion section. In week 3, staff members of the same office are expected to work on the Planning a Survey as a group and submit ONE final plan summarizing the goals to be measured by the support services office, sample population to be measured, and questions to be addressed by the survey. Therefore, staff of the same office are expected this week to set time for meetings during work time to negotiate points of views and come up with the final plan for the survey. The forms should be posted on Blackboard by 12 am on June 20. After posting the chart under Designing a Survey, the Dr. Trump will respond to each of your plans and give you feedback to make necessary changes. Also feel free to Dr. Trump if you have any questions.

8 Week 3- Designing Surveys June 14 – June 20
After you have evaluated surveys and learned about designing good surveys, it is your turn to design one.

9 Week 4- Designing Surveys June 21 – June 27
This week, you are going to design your online survey using the information you completed in the Planning your Survey form. Follow the following steps: Go to Create a username by signing up for FREE Click on Create Survey and start designing you survey. Follow the instructions provided by the website to get access to the survey that you designed. Post the link under Designing a Survey on Blackboard. Give feedback to 3 other offices on their survey design in the comments boxes. Designing the online survey is also a collaborative activity. Make sure to set time for meetings to complete the activities for Week 4. Remember that you can contact the mentor anytime if you need further clarification. One username is enough for every office since every office will be creating one survey. Post the link to your survey by 12 am June 25. After you post the link, allow two days to receive feedback from the mentor to make necessary changes to your survey. The feedback needs to be constructive i.e. it should help other offices to fix parts of their survey if necessary.

10 Week 5: Implementing Surveys June 28 - July 4
As noted by the readings, implementing surveys is as important as designing them. Use the steps that you posted in the blackboard discussion area to implement the survey you designed. Dr. trump will continue to monitor the implementation of the surveys. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact him.

11 Week 6: Follow up on Implementing the Surveys July 5 – July 11
Don’t forget to monitor the students’ responses in the Analyze section of your Survey Monkey account. This will help you keep an eye on the number of the students who have responded to the survey. Complete the survey on the following slides to evaluate the course.
