Isaiah 49.1-13 This is the 2nd of Isaiah’s Servant Songs
These are Hebrew poems about Jesus This one is specifically about Jesus’ earthly ministry—Isaiah are about salvation Isaiah 42; 49; 50; 52/53

Isaiah 49: 1-3—The Servants Unique Commission
49.1: He has a world wide audience 49.1: His ministry existed prior to His birth 49.2: He has unique abilities His words are like a sharp sword He is a perfect arrow He is specially prepared, and specially protected 49.3: He has God’s unique designation “My Servant” “In Whom I will be glorified”

Isaiah 49.4 You would think that such knowledge, such a commission, and such glowing statements, would foster every confidence Except that 49.4 are not those kinds of words They are very “human.” They are Jesus’ response to the rejection He experienced—49.7 Men despise (scorn) Him Israel detests Him He serves human rulers

Applications 49.4 Serving the Lord is labor
49.4 Believing that our service is accomplishing nothing is not sinful (“nought” means “empty space”) 49.4 Only God is truly able to make these judgments 49.5 “Success” isn’t the same to God as it is to us 49.5 God, and doing His will, is our strength

1Co_3:8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. 1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 2Jn_1:8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
