Mrs. Brown is an African-American author and educator born June 11th 1883 in Henderson, NC.
At the age of 18, she had a dream of building her own school for African-American girls, and she did so nearly single handedly after they closed the school she was working at.
She died at age 77 in Greensboro, NC. There is now a museum in Greensboro to honor her.

3. Her Background
Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown was born June 11th 1883 in Henderson, North Carolina. Her family moved north in the late 1880’s. She was a very smart African- American student. In 1901 she accepted a teaching job in a one room school house in Sedalia, NC. She got married in 1911, but it did not last very long.

4. Palmer Memorial Institute
Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown founded Palmer Memorial Institute. She lead this school for fifty years. The schools real name is Alice Freeman Palmer Memorial Institute, but its better known as Palmer Memorial Institute. It is located in Sedalia, NC. This school was a college and secondary school for African American women. Ms. Brown named this school after a women who dedicated her life to women education.

Charlotte Hawkins Brown died in She died in Greensboro, NC. In 1971, ten years after her death, they closed the Institute. After her death they made a museum for all the wonderful things she has done. The museum is in Greensboro, NC right now.
