3. BACKGROUND
The Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI) and EC Schools Building Programme (ECSBP) are an initiative of both the National Department of Basic Education (DBE) and Provincial Department of Education (DoE) to address the backlogs in the eradication of inappropriate school structures and in the provision of basic services to schools that do not have such services. These services include water, sanitation and electricity. These Programmes are seen against the background of inadequate and poor physical infrastructure in the schools and the government’s desire to bring all schools in the Province to an adequate standard to ensure that the facilities are conducive for effective teaching and learning.
