SCIENCE INQUIRY
2
What is biology? The science that studies living things and their relationships to their environment
3
Abiotic : nonliving things
biotic: living things
4
Biotic Abiotic Humans Soil Animals Water Plants Sun Leaves Wind Trees Temperature Decomposers minerals
5
Science is made up of facts and theories
Facts: are based on experiments and careful observations; the truth Theories: scientific guesses and possible answers to complex problems
6
What is science inquiry?
Science inquiry is the way scientist get their ideas to explain how the world works Science inquiry involves asking questions, and locating, interpreting, and processing information from a variety of sources
7
Science Inquiry involves using the scientific method to make sure the information you get is correct and valid
8
What is the scientific method?
A series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurrence
10
Steps of the Scientific method
1. make an observation
11
2.Develop a research plan
A research plan involves finding background information
12
3. Hypothesis An educated guess
a prediction about a possible answer to a problem Written as an If, then statement It must be testable
13
4.Experiment Experiments are done to test the hypothesis
14
5. collecting and organizing DATA
15
What are the various methods of recording and organizing data?
17
6. The results
18
After carefully considering how well the predicted result and the actual result of the experiment correspond, a conclusions statement can be made.
19
If your results matches your hypothesis then you write:
7. Conclusion statement If your results matches your hypothesis then you write: The results supports the hypothesis
20
If your results DOES NOT match your hypothesis, then you write:
The results refutes the hypothesis
21
The conclusion is based upon:
Evidence Peer review
22
8. Report your findings . Scientists generally report the results of their research in scientific journals or in papers at conferences. They report not only the results but also their methodology and any problems or questions that arose during their hypothesis testing.
23
9. Conduct further research
If the data failed to confirm your initial hypothesis, it's time to come up with a new hypothesis and test it. Even if a hypothesis is confirmed, further research is necessary to ensure that the results are reproducible and not just a one- time coincidence.
24
Elements of a valid experiment
A. Experimental group: this is the group that gets the experimental treatment B. Control group: this group remains the same; they don’t get any experimental treatment; Placebo C. Large sample size
25
D. variety within the sample groups
E. have repeated trials
26
F. Dependent variable:[then]
The end result Represented by the letter “Y” on a graph
27
G. independent variable:[if]
the item used in the experiment that determines the end results Represented by the letter “X” on a graph
29
H. Controlled variables:
All the items/things in both the control group and experimental group that are the same
