Design Technologies Curriculum:
Investigating/ Generating Apply design thinking, creativity, innovation and enterprise skills to develop, modify and communicate design ideas of increasing sophistication Producing Work flexibly to safely test, select, justify and use appropriate technologies and processes to make designed solutions Evaluation Evaluate design ideas, processes and solutions against comprehensive criteria Planning and Managing Develop project plans to plan and manage projects individually and collaboratively taking into consideration time, cost, risk and production processes
3
In order to achieve the standards set out in the curriculum, you are required to complete several tasks (CATs). When completed, these CATs make up a full unit of work and will be theory and prac based. You may use the booklet to complete the required work or you may present the work as a PowerPoint, Word Document, etc. Throughout the unit of work, you will follow the design process.
4
Throughout this unit of work you will gain knowledge, and develop your skills in the following:
Researching a design Tools and their uses Researching and Investigating Sketching/Drawing/Designing Production Processes Analysing and Evaluating Risk Assessment Planning and time-management
5
Brief You are required to design, make a decorative candle holder of your own choice. CONSTRAINTS (MUST do): The candle holder must: contain some metal components Be safe to use Be stable (not topple over) CONSIDERATIONS (YOUR choice): Wall mounted or table feature. Additional Materials Shape Style Texture Finish Materials colour Number of candles

CAT 1 Inspirational Collage
Build an “Inspirational collage” of images Visit a home ware store, use the internet, books, magazines, catalogues etc… in order to gather design ideas and concepts. Evidence of at least 20 ideas in the form of diagrams, photographs or pictures all with annotations must be provided. The collage should be constructed electronically on the following page Evidence of investigation and validation for material choice will need to be shown..
8
Inspirational Collage
Place images on this page to create a collage that inspires you You are require to have a minimum of 20 pictures
9
CAT2 Initial Design ideas Produce design ideas in the form of sketches
Identify your preferred design option
10
CAT 2: Initial Sketches You are required to draw 4 conceptual sketches of proposed design ideas. These may be in the form of thumbnail sketches that should include, shape , form, size and colour details. Annotations must be included in order to illustrate the development of your ideas. For example what you like or dislike about the design
11
CAT3 Final design
12
CAT 3 Final design option Provide an image of your final design. The image may be in the form of a drawing or photograph. Use this sheet to display your final design.
13
CAT 3 Final Design Explain why you chose this design as your preferred option. Identify what it is that you like about this design You should use terms that highlight the elements and principles of design. Elements of design: shape, form, line, colour, translucency, transparency, texture. Principles of design: style, proportion, balance, symmetry, asymmetry, pattern, space. ____________________________________________________

CAT 6: Evaluation Answer the following questions in a paragraph. THINK about……….. Have I ever been late to class? Do I always have the equipment I need (including shoes)? Do I use my class time well? What is my behaviour like………am I respectful? Do I make an effort to catch up with my work when I have had time off? Do I complete follow-up learning tasks? Do I always complete work to the best of my ability? What did I learn? What could I improve on next time? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
