WHMIS HAS A NEW NAME, its called GHS!
WHMIS is a national hazard communication system that provides information on the safe use of hazardous products in Canadian workplaces. There is a new initiative that hopes to standardize chemical hazard classification and communication globally. This has resulted in a change in the WHMIS symbols that you have previously learned. It is now called the Global Harmonized System (GHS).

FLAMMABLE These materials have the ability to catch on fire easily
Examples: Propane gas

OXIDIZERS Materials that can intensify a fire Examples:
Hydrogen peroxide

GAS CYLINDER Gases under pressure Examples: Oxygen tank

CORROSIVE Materials will chemical damage or destroy metals
May cause serious skin burns and eye irritation Example: Hydrochloric acid

EXPLOSIVE Materials that are self-reactive or can explode Examples:
Potassium

ACUTE TOXICITY can cause death or toxicity with short exposure to small amounts Example: Carbon monoxide

HEALTH HAZARD may cause or be suspected of causing serious health effects Example: Asbestos

Irritants, Sensitizers and Other Hazards
May cause less serious health effects or damage to the ozone Example: Acids

BIOHAZARDOUS INFECTIOUS MATERIALS
Infectious agents or a biological toxin causing a serious disease or death Examples: Used needles
